Countdown to Rio!

Meanwhile, here are some of the speakers joining us in Rio: Catalina Botero, Freedom of Expression Rapporteur for the Organization of American States, on how journalists can fight back; Brazil’s Supreme Court Chief Justice, Joaquim Barbosa; David Leigh, on four decades of groundbreaking investigations at The Guardian; Pulitzer Prize winners Sarah Cohen, Steve Doig, David Cay Johnston, and Xanic von Bertrab; and other top investigative journalists from across Latin America and the world.

After Rio: Call for Proposals for GIJC 2015

The Global Investigative Journalism Conference is the most significant international gathering of investigative journalists. Held every two years, the conference attracts hundreds of reporters and editors from as many as 80 countries. Producing the event requires intense planning, fund-raising, and operational skills by its hosts, but the effort is worth it because of the high standards of GIJC speakers and sessions, its global impact, and the way it raises the profile and stature of the organizers.

Welcome to the Global Investigative Conference Website

It’s time again. Every two years since 2001, the world’s investigative journalism community has joined together in a different city, and the results have been extraordinary. We’ve spread investigative reporting and data journalism around the world, sparked the creation of dozens of investigative reporting centers, and led to hundreds of great stories and collaborations. Registration is now open for the Global Investigative Journalism Conference. You’ll find our registration and conference pages available in the three main languages of the conference: English, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Global Shining Light Award

In October 2013, the Global Investigative Journalism Conference will again present the Global Shining Light Award, a unique award which honors investigative journalism in a developing or transitioning country, done under threat, duress, or in the direst of conditions. This is the fifth international conference at which the Global Shining Light Award is being granted. Past winners can be seen here in Geneva in 2010 and in Kiev in 2011. The award will be announced and presented at a public forum at the global conference, held October 12 to 15, 2013, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Deadline for submissions was June 15, 2013. Background
Each year dozens of journalists and media workers are killed – and hundreds more are attacked, imprisoned or threatened – just for doing their job.

Guardian’s Greenwald To Speak at GIJC13

Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian journalist who since June has broken a series of stories on NSA spying, will speak on a showcase panel at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Rio de Janeiro this October. Greenwald will talk about government secrecy and his work uncovering the NSA’s global surveillance programs.
